Joe Pagac — Muralist, Tucson, Arizona

Joe's mother, Sue, is from Shorewood and is one of Billie's oldest friends. Billie watched Joe grow up. Now he paints the tallest mural in Arizona and shows up in the lower-left corner of his own work, jumping in his characteristic painted pants.

His mural, Maria, is on the cover of this book. Standing in front of a Joe Pagac mural is not like looking at a photograph. You have to be there to understand the scale.

Nancy Olson — Author and Dance Friend, Milwaukee

Nancy came to Hawaii with Fran in December 2016. She's the one who turned the cement-block walls at Waena into something livable, with a bamboo wall arrangement and coffee-cup decals. That's Nancy.

She's also a published author. Her book Destiny's Threshold: Nancy Olson's Channeled Expression through Art & Writings is available on Amazon.

Friends who inspire and create

Celebrating connections and creativity

The dance friends, the musicians, the people who showed up — that's the chosen family.

In Milwaukee: Reverend Raven, Alex Wilson, The Jimmys, Barefoot Jimmy, Robert Allen Jr., and many others.  And of course, cousin Tommy Blood.

You don't plan a chosen family. It just keeps showing up on the dance floor.
